HOUSEFLIES Suspended Animation When threatened by cold temperatures or lack of food and moisture, the housefly body can temporarily shut itself down in a process similar to hibernation, called diapause. This process, which comes on gradually and can last for months, can take place at any point in a housefly life cycle. House flies have sponge-like mouthparts, which are good for soaking up liquefied substances but not for eating solid foods. So, the house fly either seeks out food that is already in puddle form, or it finds a way to turn the food source into something it can manage. This is where things get kind of gross. When a house fly locates something tasty but solid, it regurgitates onto the food.Because house flies thrive in places that are teeming with pathogens, they have a bad habit of carrying disease-causing agents with them from place to place. House flies are known to transmit at least 65 diseases and infections, including cholera, dysentery, giardiasis, typhoid, leprosy, conjunctivitis, salmonella, and many more.
Powderpost beetles are potentially the most destructive beetle pests of seasoned wood (termites are more destructive overall, however). These small, wood-boring insects may damage both hardwoods , as well as softwoods. What makes these beetles so potentially damaging is their ability to repeatedly infest relatively dry, seasoned wood over many years and many generations of beetles. There are other wood-boring insects that are less important because they do not infest wood after the first generation which limits their damage potential. Powderpost beetles are small brown beetles with elongated bodies and small heads. They range in size from 1/8 to 3/4 inches in length, depending on the species. Powderpost beetles lay their eggs on top of wood or just below the surface of the wood. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feeds on the wood, chewing a tunnel to the surface over the course of one to five years. The beetles eat both hard and softwoods. The type of wood eaten depends on the species, and damage is often found in floors, planks, paneling, door frames, furniture and molding.

Spiders are not insects. They belong to a separate group called arachnids, which also includes scorpions. A spider’s body is divided into two parts linked by a narrow waist. It has four pairs of legs tipped with claws, but no spiders have wings. All spiders can make silk but not all spin webs. There are at least 35000 species of spider. Most are harmless but a few can be deadly. The banana spider of Central and South America produce 6mg of venom, enough to kill six adults. Other deadly spiders are the funnel-web, which lives in Australia, and the wolf spider of Central and South America. The black widow and various tarantulas are also very dangerous and can kill.
Common Borer is also known as Woodworm and Furniture Beetle. The larvae of the beetle eat wood; not just the wood of your house such as weatherboards, floorboards, joists, etc. They also eat untreated wooden furniture.
Borer Beetle larvae emerge from eggs laid by the adult beetles on bare wood or old flight holes. The larvae eat their way through the interior of the wood for 2-4 years and then pupate just below the surface before emerging as an adult and eating their way out creating a new flight hole. Emergence is between October and March. The small brown beetle adults fly off, mate and the females lay eggs on bare wood, completing the life-cycle.
In the same way that you might not notice your house timbers are being attacked by borer until you look for the damage in the dark places like your sub-floor, it is not always obvious that furniture is being attacked. The exit/flight holes in the wood are most likely to be in the underside of the furniture, interior or rear; places that are in lower light.
